Roy and I were lucky enough to be able to check out the new memorial that was created at Ground Zero to remember those who lost their lives in the attacks on the World Trade Center in 2001. In order for us to be able to see the memorial, we had to reserve tickets online for a certain time, pick up our tickets from the memorial shop and line up at the entrance along with others who had reserved tickets for that time slot. The line up took a while but once we were let through, we followed the long path to a security check where we had to empty our pockets, etc and have our bags x-rayed. Once we arrived at the memorial, the mood changed from aggravation from rigorous security checks to sadness and awe. The pools that represent the footprint of the twin towers were really beautiful. It's hard to forget what happened ten years ago when it is still so prominent on the news, particularly because of the recent ten year anniversary of the tragic event.
Looking around at the crowd it was obvious to see that it is still very much in the hearts and minds of those effected. It would still be hard if the tragedy had have happened because of mother nature but there's something more raw and distressing knowing that this was caused by man out of hatred. I think the memorial was a very tasteful way to honour those who were lost and I'm glad that we had the opportunity to see it in person.
Looking through the window of the museum that is being built. Part of the metal structure of one of the buildings. |
