Nacionalni park Plitvička jezera (Plitvice Lakes National Park)

Another thing that attracted us to Croatia was the Plitvice Lakes National Park. It was about an hour and a half drive from Zadar and amazingly on the drive, the scenery changed significantly. It went from sandy coloured beachside towns to lush, green, rolling hills and rainforest. Along with the scenery change was a weather and temperature change which we weren't really prepared for. We did actually take suitable attire on our trip but we left it all at the hotel... Doh! We sat in the cold rain and ate an extremely mediocre lunch as we contemplated our options for exploring the park. Luckily there was a gift shop/supermarket that sold ponchos which shielded us from the rain and the chilly winds.

We pored over the maps and various routes throughout the park and decided to take a boat trip across the lake. Once we got down to the lake we quickly realised what all of the fuss was about. It was beautiful! The water was a bright, green/blue colour and clear enough to see the bottom at all depths. We were lucky enough to catch a boat in between groups of tourists so we had the whole thing to ourselves - free to wander and snap photos from all angles.

Our lovely ponchos!

It was lovely to see the contrast of the sea and the inland parts of Croatia. Next time hopefully Roy won't be at a work conference and he will be able to come and explore the beautiful country too.
